Spectra Magazine is a digital-only science fiction, fantasy and horror short fiction publication, available from a range of popular eBook stores, including the Apple App Store, WH Smiths, Amazon, Kobo, OmniLit and many others.
Spectra Magazine is a subscription-based service and costs £7.99/$13.99 for six issues (individually priced for some markets). Each issue contains four new short stories as well as a range of news and reviews covering all things that denizens of the sci-fi, fantasy and horror world will enjoy.
Spectra Magazine is a semi-professional publication dedicated to the presentation of new and upcoming talent and we pay for every story that we publish. In that regard, we’re much like many other excellent short fiction magazines, such as Interzone, Asimov and Apex.
The way in which we’re different is that we pay a percentage of the magazine’s revenue, rather than cents-per-word, to our writers. But it’s better than that. We don’t just pay our writers a percentage for the issue their story appears in, but for the entire six month subscription period.
If a writer has their story approved for publication, they will earn monthly payments for six months’ worth of sales from all the markets that Spectra Magazine is available from. No other magazine offers this type of remuneration to its writers, allowing them to earn from their stories for as long as the magazine’s subscription period. Our success is the success of our writers.
Another way in which Spectra Magazine is different is that we are the only digital magazine written specifically for devices such as the iPad, the Kindle and the Sony eReader.
The magazine is a collaboration between the interactive narrative design company, Pure Square Go, and the book, eBook and audio book publisher, Andrews UK, so our content is edited by writing professionals with years of editing experience and specific expertise in digital markets and devices.
That means our magazines look great, navigate seamlessly, update without any fuss and receive relevant, tailored exposure through professionally targeted ads and marketing campaigns.
Ever bought an application or a subscription, only to see the seller give it away for free the following weekend? Spectra operates across all popular digital platforms for eBooks, and won’t discount the magazine half way through your subscription. Per issue, Spectra Magazine is already very affordable and we won’t compromise the quality for brief chart gain. This keeps things fair, both for our loyal readers who pay full price on the publishing day, and for our writers who’d lose out from impromptu chart-climbing exercises.
There are so many great writers out there looking for a chance to put their words in front of you, and Spectra is committed to seeking out those hidden literary gems and helping them get their stories out into the world. Submissions are open to anyone and everyone, regardless of experience. So long as your stories are outstanding, you’re welcome at Spectra.
