Sharktopus circling the SyFy waters September 25th
If I were Roger “King of the B-Movies” Corman I’d have been tempted to hold Sharktopus until closer to Halloween, but as a connoisseur of cheeseball horror, cheap slashers, moronic monster flicks and roller derby (what? Can’t I like skating?) the September 25th broadcast date for the SyFy original Sharktopus has me very excited.
Warmly embracing the light side of exploitation cinema so popular during the home video boom of the mid-80s (and seen again recently in superb movies like Snakes on a Plane and Poultrygeist), Sharktopus is almost guaranteed an immediate status as a cult classic.
Starring Eric “Julia’s brother” Roberts, the film follows the creation of a shark/giant octopus hybrid intended for military use through a remote control. Naturally the abominable creation refuses to succumb to it’s military master’s will and goes on a killing rampage at an idyllic Mexican coastal resort. Cue the hot babes in bikinis, gratuitously violent deaths, and emergence of an all-American hero to save the day.
Seriously, why does anyone bother going to the cinema any more with solid gold viewing like this going out for free on the TV?
We’ll be on the edge of our seat on September 25th with popcorn in one hand and a Sharktopus flag in the other. In the meantime, here’s the trailer.
