Russian Transformers short film beats bay’s efforts

An unofficial Transformers test film has emerged from Russia, put together by upcoming 20-year old filmmaker Alexander Vladimirovich Semenov, and is causing quite an Internet sensation.

The short film shows two hip young robot warriors pitting their miniaturized, yet heavily armed Transformers against each other in a deserted street. With a sensational twist after the micro-bot battle, it’s easy to see that Russia’s new filmmaking talent is more than prepared to give Holloywood some serious competition.

The film work was shot in two days, with just a month of effects and production work afterwards.

Although the effects are definitely the film’s highlight, there’s a lot more going on that warrants recognition. Telling a complete story within a three and a half minuite short film is incredibly difficult (just ask anyone who’s entered our flash fiction competition), but Semenov’s film has just enough of a hint to suggest a fascinating underground robot fight club beneath urban Russia that effortlessly buries the mega-budget Hollywood travesties.

If Michael Bay has any filmmaking nonce (you decide) he’ll be hiring himself a Russian translator for Transformers 3.
