Priest trailer-a futuristic 3D horror sci-fi vampire western

The studio has managed to nail Sam Raimi’s name to the big screen adaptation of the Korean graphic novel Priest, which is probably the only reason most horror fans are entertaining this one.

Dubbed as a 3D futuristic superhero vampire western sci-fi horror, you’d be forgiven for thinking the cinematic version of Priest was more than a little schizophrenic. The cast line-up isn’t terrible (Karl “Bones” Urban being the most notable among them), but it’s hard not to look at this as being both a quick answer to Solomon Kane, and a rush to beat Conan to the box office. It’s also jumping on board the recent vampire bandwagon, which wouldn’t be a problem if the source material actually contained any vampires. It doesn’t.

According to the wealth of people out there who devotedly follow the original comic, Priest has changed everything but the title and main protagonist’s name. Changes (sacrifices?) are always made when a comic goes live-action, but it’s never a good sign when the entire mythology is stripped away and replaced by a story from Hollywood’s small stockroom. For one thing it suggests the film makers aren’t particular fans of the original material, so they’re the last people who should be involved.

However, the newly released trailer at least shows there’s some rampant action mixed into the cliched plot. It’s not especially prominent on Spectra Magazine’s must-watch radar, but could be worth a glance if you fancy visiting the cinema after a good few beers. Check it out.
