Reality TV Splatter is Big Brother with blood and guts

Posted 10 September 2010 | Horror,News

I hate reality TV. There’s plenty of inane television out there (much of which I can enjoy), so it’s not the anaesthetic-for-the-masses nature of reality TV that bothers me. It’s the assertion that it reflects real life. I don’t know about you, but the Big Brother house isn’t the reality I live in, and I’m quite glad about it.

Anyway, the Horror Channel just dropped us a line to tell us about a gruesome new twist on “reality” programming, that’s far enough on the side of madness to actually start giving this form of broadcasting a new appeal. With a story-focused approach to the audience participation, Splatter will follow a horror plot about the suicide of Jonny Splatter and the inheritance grabbers who quickly flock to his graveside.

Trapped in his creepy Hollywood mansion, the undead begin to rise and pick off Jonny’s posthumous well-wishers one by one as he take his revenge from the shadows. The difference with Splatter is that viewers will be invited to participate, and vote on which of the screaming teenagers, groupies, managers, ex-girlfriends and other hangers-on will be killed off next, and which will be spared. Multiple outcomes have been prepared and will play out depending on the audience’s mood and Jonny’s savage plan.

Goonies and Lost Boys “star” Corey Feldman (did you see Lost Boys 2, by the way? Made me wish I was a zombie so I could rip my own throat out) takes lead role as Jonny Splatter, and the show will air over three nights beginning on Friday 24th September, continuing on Friday 1st October and concluding on Friday 8th October.

Splatter will also star a personal favorite Tony Todd (of Star Trek, Candyman, Night of the Living Dead 1990, The Man From Earth and so much more), is directed by Joe Dante (of Gremlins fame) and produced by b-movie guru Roger Corman. Check it out on the Horror Channel at 22:55 on 24th September.
